S.K.C. Championship Show 2015 Critique

Many thanks to the committee of the Scottish Kennel Club for the opportunity to judge Deerhounds. Thanks also to my stewards Ian and Joy, and all exhibitors for taking time out to attend. I thought overall quality was good especially in the higher classes. One point I feel is worth mentioning which is seldom broached was the poor condition of some of the dogs teeth – lets keep them clean!!

PUPPY DOG (1,0)

1st Constanine`s Kaleginy the Forester. 8 month well put together puppy with good flat bone, dark eye, well folded small ears, straight front and good feet. Good sweep over topline and good hind quarters, steady mover. BP.

JUNIOR DOG (4,2)

1st Heap`s Leoch Jaimie of Fintalloch. Nice head and strong neck, feet ok and good topline. Would prefer more depth of chest. He would have benefited from better hind angulation as this restricted his movement.

2nd Gathern`s Leoch Jacobite Lad. Litter brother of 1st. Raw youngster at his first show. Masculine head, topline ok and has a decent brisket but weak in front pasterns and hind quarters need time to develop.

POST GRADUATE DOG (5,1)

1st McIntyre`s Almondbank Lead on McDuff. Won this class on type, shapely hound with best hind quarters in class.  Dark eye, neat well folded ear but a little straight in shoulder. Good rise over topline, good croup into well muscled hind quarters. Carrying a good harsh coat. For a male I would just like to see a bit more of him all round.

2nd Cunninham`s Teviotdale Banner Blue. Lovely head and expression, a little short in upper arm. Good feet, gentle rise over topline and good spring of rib. Shapely hind quarters but sluggish on the move.

3rd McKinnon`s Moireach Ospray of Fingon.

LIMIT DOG (6,4)

1st Barret`s Pharcourse Noah at Stranwith.  Thought this to be a hound of excellent breed type in tip top condition. Looked a picture standing. Soft expression, flat skull, well set ears, straight front, great depth of chest and gentle sweep over topline.  Drooping hind quarters and low set hocks. I would have liked to see him extend more in front movement but I just couldn’t go past him for Dog CC.

2nd Milne and Andrew`s Islay`s Iarla to Leoch. Athletic dog in tremendous muscular condition. Short coated dark hound, masculine head which would have benefited from more facial furnishings. Good reach of neck and very good forechest, deep in brisket and good bend of stifle.

OPEN DOG (4,0)

1st Hawkins CH Kwaricott Corelli.  Masculine hound with a really good outline, slightly strong in head but has a strong neck leading into a well laid shoulder. Straight front, plenty of depth throughout and a strong back end. Shown in fit condition which was reflected in his light and true movement. RCC.

2nd McBean`s Killoeter Ruaig. Close decision between 1st and 2nd. A very well presented hound shown in hard condition. Well angulated front and back. Well off for bone. Substantial male with great depth of chest and powerful hind quarters. A sound and true mover.

3rd Morton and Morgan`s CH Cotherstone Shot and Steel.

VETERAN DOG (1,0)

Swanson`s Menteith Declan of Altimarlach. 8 ½ years. Nice type, built on lighter lines. Would prefer more bone but a shapely hound none the less.  Good deerhound head and good back end. Didn’t let himself down on the move.

PUPPY BITCH (2,0)

1ST Adams Stranwith Nia for Zandahar.  6 ½ month youngster.  Pretty as a picture, lovely dark crisp coat and curvy throughout. Good feet and low set hocks. Very composed on the move. One I will keep my eye on.

2nd Whyte`s Sorimsway Passchendael. Lightly built puppy with nice head but was very difficult to assess as she was giving her handler a torrid time.

JUNIOR BITCH (3,2)

1st Heap`s Leoch Juniper of Fintalloch.  Long cast bitch with a lovely crisp coat, shown in good condition. Feminine head, dark eye and good reach of neck. Straight front and good feet.  Well muscled hind quarters. But like her litter brother, would have liked a better bend of stifle.

YEARLING BITCH (3,0)

1st Cunningham`s Chuilinn Ballad.  Very close decision between 1st and 2nd. Litter sisters of a very similar type. Thought this to be the better mover.  Lovely head, dark eye and small ears. Good front angulation and a shapely back end. Good crisp coat.

2nd Robertson`s Chuilinn Berengaria. Similar comments apply. At first I thought this would be my winner as she is so shapely. Just pipped at the post!

3rd Lindsay`s Celticmoon Shadow Magic.

POST GRADUATE BITCH (8,1)

1st Finnet and Heathcote`s Shagied Mrs Bridges. Ultra feminine head, soft expression, small ears, good neck into a good lay of shoulder.  Deep chest and low set hocks. Shown in fit condition, would just like her to have a bit more scope throughout.

2nd Swanson`s Cotherstone Brogue of Altimarlach.  Dark bitch with good harsh coat. Pleasing head, dark eye. A bit narrow in front but good feet. Good depth of chest, well sprung ribs, good width in back end. Steady mover.

3rd McIntyre`s Hillmorton Hazel.

LIMIT BITCH (5,1)

1st Robertson`s Chuilinn Whisper.  Stood out in this class, larger bitch with lots of quality and plenty of scope.  Good head and neck, deep chest, broad hind quarters, good length from hip to hock. If she lost a couple of pounds it would just sharpen her up and could see her take top honours.

2nd Smart`s Kessock Marsco of Greystiel.  Good honest bitch with a nice balance about her. Well laid shoulders and strong loin. Good return of upper arm. Felt her fee could be better.

3rd Cartmel`s Brylach over the Broomstick with Cusidh.

OPEN BITCH (7,1)

Thought this to be a very good class.

1st McBean`s Killoeter Ralia. Quality bitch presenting a classic deerhound outline.  She has lovely flowing lines throughout. Good head and neck, good fore chest, well muscled front, broad powerful hind legs. An excellent harsh coat. She flowed around the ring with great ease at one with her young handler.  BCC and BOB.  Delighted she went on to Group 3.

2nd Redmond and Friend`s CH Lady Sea with Greybrows.  A very well constructed hound, shown in top condition. She is so well put together all round. Plenty of bone, good depth of chest and well sprung ribs.  Correct topline and good underline. A hound that gives an overall impression of strength and grace. RCC.

3rd Finnet and Heathcote`s Hyndsight a Girl Like You.

VETERAN BITCH (3,0)

1st Roberson`s Chuilinn Afra.  8 ½ years old with a kind expression and thin ears.  Curvy as a deerhound should be. Good feet and moved well.

2nd Foy`s Glenfoyble Filliberry.  More workmanlike in appearance.  Good shoulder placement, carrying a little weight but still moved out well. Enjoying her day out.

3rd Cartmell`s Riding the Wind with Cusidh.
